Day 1 - Jurassic Coast, Devon and Dorset
The East Devon and Dorset Coastline have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. A stretch of coastline unique globally. The only place on the planet whereby you can view all ancient rock strata identified within the time frames of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Triassic periods, all in one 90 mile stretch of coastline. Rich red desert sandstone, crumbly white chalk and fossil dense slate and shale are many of the colours in the cliff faces on this journey into East Devon and Dorset.
Day 2 - Cornwall Tin Mining Coast
A Cornish UNESCO Coast Tour can including locations such as
St Agnes mining heritage ruins at the blue Hills, Towanroath and Wheal Coates.
The stunning views around Pentire headland across to several mining stack ruins.
The Penwith Peninsula area of Cornwall with locations potentially including,
the thought provoking ruins at Levant and Botallack mines, the Geevor working mine museum and other sites in the area.
Day 3 - Torbay and the South Hams
Torquay hides a secret, hidden away in its hills, a labyrinth of limestone caverns that provide a window into ancient past.
Stone Age people settled within these caves, as did the later Bronze Age and even eventually Romans took shelter here too.
Brixham's mighty Berry Head cliff stacks, its Country Park and Nature Reserve and Torquay's Hopes Nose cliffs and coves both feature in the 400 million year old history of Torbay and its formation. Desert sand stone that glows red at sunrise and limestone with quartz that shimmers in afternoon light, Torbay is a geologists playground hidden in plain sight. Another location of interest is Cockington village, a well documented and popular venue that can feature due to the picturesque red sandstone cottages and their thatched roof tops. A great place to grab a tea room stop or even a lunch stop too.
Day 4 - Dartmoor Experience Tour
Although not an official UNESCO registered site, the western side of the National Park does contain many of the tin mining ruins and sites that pre-date those of Cornwall of international interest. Bronze Age settlements that went onto inspire an industry that changed the face of Dartmoor from the 1200's onward. One of the UK's most inspiring National Parks, with craggy granite tors, sweeping moorland, quaint villages that time forgot, wilderness and natural wonder, not forgetting the infamous Dartmoor Ponies!
