Historic Buildings, Gardens & Estates Tours

Explore Devon’s Historic Churches & Cathedrals

Picture
Devon is an old county that stretches back beyond the Industrial Age, further back than Medieval times and in places, way beyond any Roman involvement.
We have 900 year old Churches, Cathedrals and grand religious buildings built on sites of earlier places of worship that pre-date modern Christianity.
Devon boasts the Cathedral with the longest, uninterrupted vaulted Medieval ceiling in the world, it has Monastery buildings that barely survived Henry VIII reformation reforms and ill fated church ruins that seem cursed by their graveyard inhabitants.
As well as this, Devon, with its temperate and warmer weather also contains some of the UKs finest country gardens and grand Manor Estates.
Many sites are carefully maintained by the National Trust and English Heritage to preserve the history for generations to come.
Estates including Greenway House, Agatha Christie's retreat, the grand Killerton House near Exeter, Coleton Fishacre owned by the D'Oly-Carte family, Compton Castle which was once, and is again, lived in by the Gilbert family of great sea faring history, to name a few. The choice is endless and very varied in nature.
A Historic Buildings themed tour can take you on a spectacular architectural journey through time to some of these wonderful and inspiring places. If it is gardens in bloom you are seeking, Devon can deliver throughout spring and summer at outstanding and award winning locations such as The Garden House and Rosemoor RHS Garden too. Gardens in all seasons with many Manor Houses and grand estates well worth exploring across the calendar year.
Devon also has some of the most haunted castles in the country, Berry Pomeroy being documented as the most haunted site with frequent sightings throughout it's dark history.
An alternative tour for those who seek an architectural connection or garden glory. Something a little different that can inspire and feed your imagination with thoughts of what life was like when these historic buildings were rising from the ground and the estates were being planned.
*entry into attractions, gardens and estates not included in tour cost, however tickets can be reserved ahead of tour at various locations.
