Dorset – England’s Jurassic Coast & Literary Inspiration

Dorset is an inspirational county. It's coastline is globally unique, the market towns are some of the earliest known in England and the county has fed the minds and artistic flare of many of the great classic writers, poets and creative folk throughout the ages.
Thomas Hardy and William Barnes were county home grown writers and poets, as well as inspiring the likes of Jane Austin and Enid Blyton from visits to locations such as Lyme Regis and the Isle of Purbeck.
A trip along the south coast of Dorset, including stops at Lyme Regis (Persuasion), West Bay (Broadchurch) and the traditional old times feel villages of Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury will charm and inspire future novelists and poets too.
The eighteen mile stretch of Chesil Beach leads onto the Isle of Portland. Quarried Portland stone from here has gone into the design and construction of many of the regions churches and Cathedrals.
The World famous and UNESCO recognised Jurassic Coast tells the ancient story of the formation of our planet as well as maybe provide the visitor with a pocket full of fossils found on the beaches of Charmouth and Lyme Regis.
The undulating landscape has been shaped by ever shifting motion with under cliffs and stepped hill topography that seems other worldly.
Sitting, perched high on Quarr Hill looking out over the Marshwood Vale it's easy to see why so many painters, artists and creative people reside in this fair county.
