A Journey Through Time – Dartmoor’s Ancient PastA large granite backbone of rock plateau that rises up through the middle stretches of Devon, carved by ice age glaciers, sculptured by eons of weather events and yet feels very timeless. Like the modern world has forgotten it.
Quaint villages, bleak open moorland, deep river gorges lined with aged deciduous trees and granite stone topped Tors that stand defiant against the onslaught of annual harsh winters. With over 5000 known archaeological sites within the National Park, Dartmoor has the most concentrated number of ancient sites in Europe. Stone rows - including the longest in length in the World, standing stones - some of the tallest in the UK, burial sites, stone circles that mystify as well as huge areas of Bronze and Iron Age settlements that have inspired some of the greats to include them in Gothic horror mystery novels, including the infamous Hound of the Baskervilles. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle set the novel on the high moor and the novel is a great theme to follow. Visiting the locations that inspired Conan Doyle will map out a fantastic journey across the moor. Tales of devilish hounds, treacherous bogs and ruined churches are all included as the day unfolds. Once your day is planned and we have finalised the itinerary, I will collect you from your accommodation or an arranged meet up point and whisk us off to Dartmoor. Entering from whichever angle suits our starting point.
A day of exploration, some walking - maybe a Tor climb to take in the views. Plenty of stops for photos, a service I provide for you, as well as visiting one of many Dartmoor villages where time seems irrelevant and life remains disconnected. A great country pub lunch and more tales, folklore and stories of giants, pixies and even old Dewer himself throughout the afternoon. Whether it is ancient sites your're interested in, or chasing the dark true background 'tail' of the Baskerville Hound, the day can be designed to suit your interest, access ability and dietary requirements. I am up for a hike as much as I am into some wellness breathing exercises in a deep green forest.
